ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION FORMS in 1:32 scale may give you a pleasant surprise. I had always known 1:24 and 1:25 scale models predominate but, until I did the research for this article, I had no idea how many 1:32 scale models existed. How does approximately 300 sound? They are available ready-to-run or as kits and about half are cars and trucks. I'll focus on those.
Model vehicles are important because they reinforce the sense of scale, as in the above photo. They also remind us trains are only one part of a model railroad's transportation system. You may find or special order every model I have listed at your local hobby shop.
The following lists are for 1992-1993 production available in the United States. I have limited them to vehicles we might have seen on American roads. The list includes cars (but no race cars), trucks, and farm equipment. I have also omitted military equipment. I have listed only the manufacturers of the roughly 130 aircraft models; most represent the era 1970 to the present. You may find more information about them from the manufacturers' catalogs. The category includes helicopters, an F-117 Stealth fighter from Testor's, and a Lindberg P.T. boat, alas, too large to fit on a flatcar.
