Title: My sisters B&B in Cahors, France
Post by: Guy Milh(imeter) on August 04, 2013, 06:40:40 AM
Hi all,

This is a build I started two years ago and I want it to be finished in september 2013. It will be a box. Scale is 1/35

http://www.flickr.com/photos/63734450@N05/sets/72157634922021403/

(I will be uploading pics here but I wanted to show as much pics as possible so you could comment)

It is a present for my sister who will be leaving Belgium to go and live in France with here Husband (It is not very far from where Alexandre lives, near Cahors)). She will be having a  "Chambre d'Hôtes" (a sort of B&B). There is  1 house where she and here husband will live, 1 house with a large kitchen and a large dining room (for guests) and a shed (with 5 rooms for guests). I'm doing her house.

The reason why it takes me so long to finish this build is because of my full-time job, my other hobby (I sing in several bands) and because of THE ROOF  >:(. Man, I do hate this roof.
It is a very old slate roof that has very irregular tiles, so I could not use any commercial plates (not that I didn't look for it). My first attempt was a plaster one with a mould I've made but it turned out terrible and was way to heavy.

Now I've made it out of strips of carboard witch I glued on another peace of carboard and then covered it with deluted wall filler.

To do list:
- add lights (on top of the front door and behind the right window)
- add flower pots
- make a box
- order the frame with museum-glass (sort of non reflecting glass that looks like there is no glass at all)

Hope you like it, pls do comment,  I will be closing the box in 2 weeks, ...

Hi Russ,

In another treat you stated:

"Usually, for a model, a "seamless" backdrop is ideal and white often works best. "Seamless" means no wrinkles, no horizon line, no other distractions."

Would that count for my enclosed box to? I,m realy uncertan what colours to use for the sides and the back. I was thinking sky blue for the back side. I tried it but the problem is that there are shades of the roof on the sky, and that is not really natural.

White might be the most neutral choice. The advantage is that every color of the model will stand out from it. In your case, you may decide a "cream" white suits the box and model better than a "bright" white. It would be an artistic decision. -- Russ

Beautifully done. Truly captured the look and feel of this architecture. When first glancing across some of the images it was not immediately apparent that it was a model.

Your sister should be most pleased.

Now you just need to post the B&B website and info :)

Thanks very much Marc & Ray,

Marc, I'm afraid there is still a lot of work to be done before she will be able to open here B&B for the public, will do the moment she opens  :D

Meanwhile I learned to solder and added two  6V lights who are battery operated   (hard time to take good pics of that) and some flower pots.
Also the box was made with the sides in a "creamy" colour as suggested by Russ (thanks Russ, it turned out nice)
I did the back in watercolours to suggest the sky, not a deep blue, rather a subtle light blue and white clouds, not to disturb the focus point.
My frame maker did his job in one day  :D.
When we have a sunny day I'll take some more pictures. (I will also give a large poster as a present to my sister, with a collage of the sun lit pics and keep one for myself, it's a little far to go and watch the box every time I feel like it (900km.)  ;D

Thanks Alexandre and Gordon !!

Alexandre, when I'm at my sisters next summer you could come over, it's not that far away from where you live.
Alors on va boire une bonne Ricard, ou deux, ou...  8).

I had a very aquard situation last week:

There was a surprise party for my sister who, as I stated before in this treat, will be leaving Belgium to go and live in France next month. I was going to give here my present (being the scale model) on this occasion.

As me and my family entered the room where the party was held (my sister was going to come later) I saw a scale model standing in the corner, made by my brother in law's father ,representing the same house I made !!!!

I'll let you be te judge of the quality of this model.

Oh what the heck, ... my sister and brother in law were very pleased with my model (to), and me, ... I will miss them A LOT !!!

I was not able to make good outside pics of the final result because of the poor weather, here is one anyway.

I must call this model done (since it is literally out of my hands :) ).

I think my next model (another box) wil be representing the interior of a jazz café  with a stage and instruments (drum, dbl. bass, piano, sax) with tables and a bar.

I think I will call it "Take Five" since there will be no personages :)

Your good modeling and good intentions notwithstanding, I take exception to the choice of a saxophone over a clarinet. Let's see if you can figure out why .... -- Russ

Russ, I read everything on this forum,  it's not that you never mentioned you play the clarinet. ;D

I will put a clarinet somewhere in a 'corner' so you won't feel neglected ;)
