hi all .
my new workshop is finished so back to it.
in my last post i mentioned that i wanted to build a flat pack model to travel with.well here is the track plan.
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages59.fotki.com%2Fv544%2Fphotos%2F3%2F1816483%2F13744406%2FDSCF3947768x1024-vi.jpg&hash=51b7b448b6a8e2890b58db998d7a7c5b970a577a).
this whole project is small but still using a large scale of 1-35.the track is 9 mm gauge using shinohara 150 mm or 6 inch radius turnouts.the base board is now smaller 300mm or 12 inches wide and 470mm long or 17 inches long the type of motive power is basically a lawn mower on wheels basic operation is possible.
i have the idear in my mind and i like it,i think there will be no more than 9 pieces in the kit.
one interesting consideration that has come up is airport security.rocking up with bits that have wires hanging out of them will most likely end up with me going to jail.so either i post it or it travels in my big bag in the hold.with good packing i cant see that these options would be a problem.more to come
kind regards kim
Kim, that "siding" looks as though it won't hold more than one tiny industrial loco and a very short car. Will it work for what you're planning? -- Russ
Hi Kim,
I'm curious how it goes on and especially I would be happy to see it next year live in Germany.
Hi Kim,
When you mentioned this idea for the project previously, I started picturing in my head what you were going to do with it, so now that it's started, I'm going to be interested to see if it turns out remotely like I could imagine you doing. Great to see the modelling space ready to go again and will look forward to how this all comes together.
Cheers,
Dan
Just started dabbling in this Gauge 9mm in 1/35th myself - Battery box locos in and out of mines also looked at a few "Lawn Mowers on narrow gauge" type things. Can any one tell me were about on this forum a video or possible You Tube of a similar narrow gauge loco pulling something like wooden fence post possibly about a year ago.
Im thinking of using Peco Crazy track of the 009 type way over scale for 009 but measures nice for 1/35th works out about 12" gauge
Barney
hi all thank you for your posts.
russ how are you i hear that you have taken up fishing in your retirement-the track plan is fine in fact i might have to make it a bit smaller.last night i bought a hard shell hand luggage suit case.it just does not fit i forgot that the case has round corners.the curved section is behind the back drop operation is simple-small train comes onto the scene engine run around train exits.
i will be using the german brand minitrains yes it is n scale tiny compared to a 1-35 scale figure.minitrains have high class mechanisms and simple pulse controllers that are very light and most important have simple transformers that work off off 12 volt nains plug in power.
the hard part is to get the engine and rolling stock to scale out in 1-35 scale to do this i will build a full size example out of cardboard in the lounge room yes i live alone
kind regards kim
Found it a 240 mm track gauge with lawn mower on wheels thing hauling log trucks - LOOK at WEIMIBAHN 240mm

1/16 scale light industrial railway with prototype gauge 10.25"
« on: October 06, 2012, 02:40:25 AM »
G'day all,
dabbling with Feldbahn modelling in 1/16 scale for some time I finally decided to do it.
It's going to be a little Feldbahn/supply railway for agricultural/estate and/or workshop purposes with a prototype gauge of 10.25", within 16,25 (16,5) mm track in 1/16 scale.
A lot of Feldbahnen, light industrie or minimum railways can be found worldwide:
10 and a Quarter Inch Gauge Railway Society *klick*
The Weimibahn (240 mm) *klick*
The Wigwell Light Railway *klick*
A Ns1 loco in scale 1/2 *klick*
Even in Spain *klick*
and at Wolds Way Lavender *klick* the harvest is collected and being transported by train, even on 7,25" track ...
My Feldbahn/supply railway is not going to be a downscaled model of any existing prototype. It's going to be a realistic, kinda "home-made" railway, how it would have been built by an owner of a 10.25 light railway ... but in my case only a 1/16 scale model of it.
1/16 is huuuuuuuge, compared i. e. to scale 1/22,5 modelling!
But IMHO the choice of 1/16 is not so bad ... au contraire ... it has a lot to commend it, because
- At first it feels very comfortable regarding aging eyes and fingers
- one could use common 16,5mm track, if one does not like to lay track by hand
- the smallest reported radius for 260mm railways is 2500mm, makes approx 150mm in 1/16 scale - would be even tight enough for a 1/16 scale pizza
- common motor units/bogies and wagons could be used for basis
- the lack of figures is not so bad as it seems at first sight, as for a 1/16 scale micro layout you only need a couple of figures, which i. e. could be recruited from military modelling -> adopt, adapt and improve (motto of the round table)
- there are a few older cars available in 1/16, i. e. a Volkswagen Beetle, which could be placed kinda abandoned and rusty on the layout or in a barn
I already started with my "finger exercises" *klick*, to get a feeling for size, proportions and looks for this bigger andfar more voluminous scale.
... to make it more comfortable (regarding working links: http://www.finescalerr.com/smf/index.php?topic=1958.0 (http://www.finescalerr.com/smf/index.php?topic=1958.0) ... ;)
BTW: Looking for a real tiny loco as a prototype? http://www.emser-bergbaumuseum.de/assets/images/Akku-Lok25proz.jpg (http://www.emser-bergbaumuseum.de/assets/images/Akku-Lok25proz.jpg) ... and again (on the left) http://www.rail.lu/im/x/3Loks2.jpg (http://www.rail.lu/im/x/3Loks2.jpg) ... or what about his one http://hofherrm.de/feldbahn/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/neuAkkulok.jpg (http://hofherrm.de/feldbahn/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/neuAkkulok.jpg)

hi all it has been a very busy year and all i have managed to do i tinker and make lots of paper shapes around the idear of a flat pack model at last i am getting some where.
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages34.fotki.com%2Fv1523%2Fphotos%2F3%2F1816483%2F13824633%2FDSCF4144768x1024-vi.jpg&hash=32d5440f9d2a411454045d4a7cab72ef7f48e480).

the first photoes are of the general arragement around the track plan that i posted before, the last is the model in travel mode.
when set up the size is 480 mm long,280mm wide and 230 mm heigh[19 inches,11 inches ,9 inches] in travel mode it is 120mm heigh[5 inches].at the moment there are 2 pieces most likely this will increase.
the general idear is that the scene is based around a water feature that ends in a dark tunnel under a group of buildings on the top level.there is a flight of stairs connecting the 2 levels.around the water feature on the bottom level there is whalf and a small roofed service area.the track runs off scene through a cutting and terminates under the buildings.the big arch is the entrance to the tunnel of love-dark water.
on the top level there are 2 alley ways 1 going straight ahead the other turns right and leads to a back gate this one has a hand rail that is parrel to the tunnel entrance.2 buildings explain the alley way system.the one on the left will be of industral use the one on the right will be a small shop, with a walled garden.a gate provides acess from the back alley.with this small walled garden maybe a few fruit trees lets see.
great lets get started i also have the mock up of the 9 mm gauge engine more later.
kind regards kim
Ah, you have started work. Good. Let's see how it develops. -- Russ
Hi Kim, very interesting small layout.
Kim, I'm very curious to see how the project developed :)
Marcel
hi helmut-marcel.
how are you both good to catch up.
i am also very interested to see how this little model turns out.over the last weekend i have built the base section even though small it has to be solid.i most likely will travel in the hold in my checked in luggage, there is no way that this piece will be able to travel in the cabin with me.it is better not to look at what the baggage handlers do to your luggage.making it solid should not pose much of a problem.base section 12mm exterior grade ply wood[1/2 inch.most of the fragile pieces will be detaciable and will travel with me, no wires.
kind regards kim
hi all
my flatpack is now into the base framing stage.all the main structure is 3 mm ply.i love ply wood for all sorts of things.to do it propertly you need a small bench saw i usually use a hobby knife and a wood plane.i feel that it is getting too heavy i might loose some weight at this stage.i have made space for a minitrain controller at the back.these little units are very light ,compact and simple[plug in transformer 12v]the loco plus the transformer produces scale slow motion perfect.
cheers for now kim

this is the top section that will have a flight of stairs connecting the 2 levels.i want a feel of back alleys in this section that will contrast the bottom level.i hate brick laying but love the effect of being hand made against the feeling that a machine has made it.a bit rough and ready just like me.the little court yard acessed from the little gate will have either a fruit tree or a large tree flowing over the wall.
kind regards kim
Nice brickwork. -- Russ
Very nice. I like the bricks.
thanks ray and russ
Kim,
well done! Looks really rough and ready! Very convincing back yard atmosphere.
Cheers,
Volker
hi all.
for the last couple of weeks i have been lucky-model time more correctly model time on the top deck of the 'dogs from dapto'.don,t ask me just go with it.stucco and fences .work also has started on the left hand side more later.any way it is the end of another year all the best happy christmas to all the scratch builders out there-cheers.

Coming together nicely. -- Russ
Like Russ said, it's coming together nicely... in a way that looks like it's coming apart :)
Looks excellent. Really like the foliage...Allan
Looks great, I like it a lot.
hi all
thank you all for the feedback.

this is the frame for the foliage-a ball of different size wire not quite perfect .on to this ball a variety of commercial foliage products are worked.
cheers kim
Hey, Kim, did you get a new hairdo or are you branching out into impressionistic sculpture? -- Russ
hang on russ i will look in the dictionary for the right word.
cheers
Hi Kim,
Great to see the progress on this idea. Certainly got some very nice character coming into it. Looks like it is going to be a bit of a visual treat in a small space, with a lot of varied textures to keep it interesting.
Cheers,
Dan
hi dan how are you doing.
there are some great effects paints around and they all work best with added texture ak interactive jumps out and best of all there is a online supplier in victoria
cheers kim
I've been well Kim...even had some time for modelling! One of these days might even get around to posting something new here :)
I'm well aware of BNA Model World. I have been getting quite a few deliveries from them of late. Last project I worked on pretty well used all AK products, so can agree that they provide good product that works well as a complete "system".
Cheers,
Dan
yes
the progress in the development of hobby finishes has been amazing.
i think we all should thank the military modellers for this, but still you have to have intelligence to use them.
cheers kim
good morning all happy new year.
busy time of the year for me wishing all good health for 2016.
as i have mentioned i am using n scale track and tiny rolling track for my flat pack module.
well here is a example of a mini' lister' that is perfect for the job.there is a quite a big following of mini garden railways typically using 10 and a 1/4 inch gauge but they can be re-gauged.n scale in 1/35 scale is -1 foot or 300 mm.yes i am working on a mock up and it works really well.
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages12.fotki.com%2Fv616%2Fphotos%2F3%2F1816483%2F13824633%2F858815808_598278332366908484_o-vi.jpg&hash=e5914dd5df13ceea359b5f8311801ef03d35e5c1).

So you are creating a miniature of a miniature .... -- Russ
Hi Kim,
that's an optimal template for an implementation as photoetching in nickel silver.
hi russ and helmut.
yes minimal gauge railways i cant believe it the market is huge with all the suppliers having full books.just the thing to run around the back yard for gardening and collecting the fire wood.looking at the huge range the 1950 style garage is my favorite.2 big doors to open so you can run your half size lister plus wagons in out of the weather.it is a kit and made of plastic -cool.
my little model is really basic fabrication maybe that is what i like about it -straight to the point
cheers kim
hi all how are you all doing.
the top section has taken its basic form, now it has to be dressed.i have been using brick by brick construction-great.white glue as a base just go for it.i like the sloppy tecknique.the top section is just a backdrop to the bottom section,i have the idear but that will have to wait
kind regards kim.

hi all .
this is the mock up of my 300 mm or i foot gauge -9n35 scale now you can have fun in a really small space.the purpose on the flat pack is to run around and collect stuff little stuff.

evening all
my flat pack has moved down to the dock level.this is the section will be in the water.the tunnel leads to the mysteries of the town great place to add over the top stuff.these sections of brick are all hand laid with ordinary plaster as grout.the steel beam is plastic.

I like it. -- Russ
Kim,
that's got some disgustingly good atmosphere. I nearly can smell the area ... the stonework, decay, coloring look very good and got an very artistic touch. In spite of my foible for this artistic aspect those rivets seem a bit coarse and oversized to my mind's structural engineering side.

good afternoon all.
for the last week or so i have done some work on the arch and built two stair cases for comparison.
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages41.fotki.com%2Fv1634%2Fphotos%2F3%2F1816483%2F13824633%2FDSCF44681024x768-vi.jpg&hash=024cb27759751fc19b1a53cb9f27d1e9fbadaf55).
with the arch i have taken the bolt details off and enhanced the crack and steel lintel detail.

two stair cases the first one made by mini art great .the last one made by me .with stairs there are standards that are used in there construction.both comply but with mini art the steel treads are too thick.in 1/35 scale they are 87 mm thick fare too thick for steel i suppose you could sand them but why bother.
cheers kim
And yours has more charisma. -- Russ
Kim, Your stairs definitely feel like they belong with the bridge (maybe de-fuzz a couple small spots on them?)
high
yes the fuzz
cheers

I agree with Volker: Your layout appeals to me actually because of this very artistic aspect, something that is lacking in my own projects, as it seems to me. Could it be that's so because I prefere a puristic style generally ???
Nevertheless I admire this artistic direction and this touch is a golden thread running through your work and some others, i.e Marcel Ackles still lifes.
I am looking forward what kind of brackish water will appear below this wonderful arch ... ::)
All the best from actually cold and wet Switzerland,

hi peter .
yes we all have many styles and to myself i try to see merit in them all, always it is important to have lots of fun and be happy in what is basically a hobby.
i really really hope that it stays cold in 12 days i will be sampling the culture of north of the equator ie europe.
the choice is there the great culture of europe or the wonderful lifestyle of australia hard choice.
you are a really good painter your stone foundations and your treatment of metal are masterful they remind me of french 18 century diorama artists.
all the best kim
Nice and artistic, I like that!
Franck
Beautiful for my eyes !
good evening all.
soon i will be moving on from being a brick layer not that i dont like bricks but enough is enough.this section has a large pipe section coming out of the dark.this pipe section will be extended and eventually end in the water.there will be other pipe sections smaller size also.
the last photo is a course a old russian steel mill. old joe stalin really knew how to make a classy mill.

hi peter.
great effect is it resin or a tube that has been used as a form for resin.very dynamic -broken pipe or a pipe filling a vessel.
here is another shot that is very tempting.

No idea, how he did that. But he has some nice water effects.

dapto dogs the more i think about it the harder it is for me to make the connection between the flat pack and doggies so for the moment i will call it both -flat pack in 1-35 scale and dapto dogs.
the first picture is of a possible lighting rig this is where the top of the travelling box becomes a reflector lighting rig-the light bounces.cheers -saluta

Nice idea for the lighting.
Must admit, with your sense of humor, first glance at the water tank my immediate thought was the red & white pipe was a drinking straw...
Hi Kim,
Nice little update, and good to see you still tinkering on this micro concept. Interesting lighting potential. I like the softened bounced light idea. When you displayed "Ace Radium", one of the things that I though presented well was the sort of floating overhead light source. As far as this overhead bounced light rig, I'm keen to see how you'd keep the compact and portable aspect to this.
Cheers,
Dan
Along with what the other guys said I really like the appearance of the walls, the tank, and the vegetation in the tank. This little diorama is coming along very adequately. -- Russ
Hi Kim,
Forgot to add in my last post...if this is being designed and built as a easily portable display, would you like to do a test flight with it next year on a short trip down to Melbourne/Geelong for a Narrow Gauge Convention? Gives you about twelve months of further experiments and construction ;)
Cheers,
Dan
thank you all for the feed back.
i have to tell you all that this little module is really hard work to get it to work requires a lot of stuffing around the amount of re builds !
i like the concept of the lights i have thought it through and have come up with the idear that the light source[strip leads] would be at the back behind the back scene.this light source would be reflected [off the top of the traveling box.
there is also a stand that is built into the box every bit has a dual purpose.
so.
1-all power simple 12 volt track, lights.
2-stand built into bottom of box.
3-display lights part of traveling box.
4-sineage part of top traveling box.
5-i have since found that most small traveling cases have the handles in side the case to save room the handles have to be on the outside[old school]
cheers
Very nice! I really like the brick walls and the plants in the tank.
hi all,
thank you for the feedback i really liked the straw comment.
i have had a bit of spare time of late and between lots of cups of tea i am pushing the model out into the rest of the base board.the giant pipe line is in place ,as you can see it is all rough what i am after is texture.this first coat is a mixture of plaster and oil paints when dry washes and finally the detail.
cheers kim.

hi all how are you all, russ still loving kicking back on the beach?
thank you all very much for the feedback it is always great getting it.
i have left the detail modelling for a bit and are concentrating on the packing and lighting .they are just as important as the modelling no more rebuilds.
the packing .
one hard shell carry on suit case[cabin friendly] cut out all the lining to expose a lean mean suit case.
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages61.fotki.com%2Fv1635%2Fphotos%2F3%2F1816483%2F13824633%2FDSCF53291024x768-vi.jpg&hash=2e906aff3f75d9d5c4c4840a74c20b7260f821f0).
the base board fits in nice and tight room on top for more stuff.i would like to secure the base to the case to stop it moving.the packing will evolve over the next steps.
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages15.fotki.com%2Fv1631%2Fphotos%2F3%2F1816483%2F13824633%2FDSCF53321024x768-vi.jpg&hash=61b734c266775f82f4e81bec490cefe173240ab0).

Interesting!
ray get a cheap suit case and dont tell the wife.i think the trick is to leave a bit of a gap .the hard shell flexes a bit.

No rain here so all of Southern California is a beach ... or a desert near the ocean ... so I suppose you could say I'm kicking back on the beach. If I were not so busy working on a music project I would finally be ready to start a small diorama. I've certainly been thinking about materials and finishing techniques. -- Russ
Hi Kim,
Wondering if some of these aircell packing pieces would be handy as different little cushion sets in and amongst the layout when it all squeezes into the case? Might be suitable to slide in and around the different elements so it all stays snug in transit.
Cheers,
Dan
hi all .
thanks dan for the feedback, the way airline security is going this module will have to travel in the hold ,pack it up and hope for the best.
i have changed the design around the area where the big pipe goes into the arch.the water tank platform has been extended and the pipe has been finished.i finish all my work with water colour and then the detail picked out with brush.also the area of the arch has been vegetated .this section arch pipe water tank base is removable so i can maintain the track and gives me flexibility with shipping.
till next time cheers-saluti.

Wait until airline security x-rays that and sees all the metal wires (RR track). Air terminal building will be evacuated, etc. etc. ::)
Nice work Kim.

yes- airport security my opion the more the better .there are too may fools who want to kill innocent people in the world.basically i can not take into the cabin too much metal or controllers.it might get through once or twice but then you might hit a tight stop and you are stuck.also when you they inspect your bags you don't do the unpacking it is done by a pair of extra big hands that have not been trained for delicate detail.the more i build the more the model is being split up.the security sensitive parts into hold in a hard shell case ,these will be protected by custom designed panels that will absorb too much vibration.the very delicate non security items with me.
really you would have to be a bit of a nut to worry so much but part of it with me is that i look at it as a part project in logistics ,sure if you had heaps of money all this packing would not be a problem like he shipping of paintings .but i dont have a lot of money -

I agree, and I'm glad the tracks don't run in a circle this time. The current effect is more credible. -- Russ
hi ray and russ how are you all.
one of the big problem of all this small base board large scale stuff is getting a good track layout.the passing loop is the basic- using 9 mm gauge helps in getting it all to fit.
cheers kim
good morning all.
work on the Dapto traveling model continues.there have been 3 new developments of late.
1-i have started work on the work barge .this vessel covers the ply wood insert in the resin water.this is a little barge more of the tender design that would have been a work station.water side construction companies typically used this size of vessel.wood and styrene so far.
2-i have changed the layout of the buildings at the back.when i looked at the original design it was getting looking very rectangular .to change this i broke the row of buildings and took away the bushes and made it into a court yard .this also has another purpose to show off my'"ice" delivery push bike ,more detail will be added but the concept works.
3-the start of the backdrop 4 mm plywood.will be painted also duel purpose.the 2 purpose top of traveling box inner protection.the 2 layers of protection area the hard shell carry on size suit case with the inner shell made of ply and padding it should work.
cheers.

thanks russ.
what i really like about is the different angles that i never though about at the beginning.i do not know how you could full plan something like this at the beginning.looking around at different modellers there tends to be a swing towards displays with a small base but a big vertical scale.one that sticks in my mind was a military model-street scene iraque.narrow streets ,utter mess everywhere but peace on the roof tops.small model but vert intense.
cheers
Kim,
I like your littered water and greenery a lot; looks like being full of sap and poisonous at the same time. About perpendicularity: You're right to remove the wall because it adds more scene to the same space than the wall and bush (which was great) did. But - to me the all over composition still remains very strictly rectangular and parallel, although this tubing draws one directly into the scenery.
I find chosing this gauge for a model railway sometimes is sailing close to caricature. Your model definitely is at the 'serious' side of the fence, but the barge looks completely out of scale, like a diminutive caricature, which in my eyes takes away all the atmosphere of the residual model. The barge's shack, which has the same shape, size and orientation as the hoods above the tunnel, adds to that impression.
Just my 5 cent about that: Positioning a much bigger barge, that implicates transport of the field railway delivered goods, in a much steeper angle to the pier may break up the perpendicularity a lot and add an impression of arriving or departing to an otherwise rather static composition. Maybe a deck mounted crane jib could implicate/explain additional 'transhipment activity' and correspond with the tubing's feature as a 'to the scene drawing element'. The barge would be cut by the layout's edge, which may give another interesting touch to the scene. It even could lie a bit skewed in the water, resulting from being unevenly loaded or some departure movements, breaking up horizontal parallelism. This may make it part of the story rather than part of a backdrop for some train movements.
If you decide to have the barge as it is, please try brickwork for it's shack ;D.
Volker
morning volker.
thank you very much for your thoughts all very constructive.this little model is full of shapes that are difficult to arrange in such a small space.my first impression of the module was that it had too much brick work and much the same tone.in changing of the back buildings i hoped change this continual line of both shape and tone.
the biggest challenge which you observed is the use of the box shape and the barge.it size does not worry me but there is something that is bugging me maybe i will look into your observations.
i am nearly finished all the hard construction i look forward to give the model a personality.there is one element that i have panned that is going to pull it all together-fragile and big maybe too fragile for traveling.
trust me it is going to look amazing.
cheers kim

hi all.
my project at the moment is the barge for Dapto.i have become more convinced about texture,i works really well with washes.this is the deck of the barge not finished but close.rough styrene construction then water based glue mixes with plaster, paint on,rember when things become too perfect it destroys the character-my thought.

at the moment i work for a company that does a lot of wood finishing by hand.on some of there pieces they apply a minim of 30 coats slowly building up the surface.this is what i try and do -slowly build up the texture, paint and detail at the moment it is about80% finished

hi all.
at the moment DAPTO is about 70% finished.i want to finish the whole scene before i come back for changes and detail.
items that i have been working on -with my little engine i have replaced all the plastic roof supports with brass, much stronger and neater .also adds much need weight.with the court yard right top layer i have added a wooden fence,it is possible still to look through the plants at the court yard detail.but most of the work has been on the barge, much changing of colour and detail.i love it but something i need is 2 good wheels for the red crane hook those black round shapes look a bit daggy.
well till next time cheers.

hi all before i go too far down the list here is my latest updates on the DAPTO-funny name but not so here in oz.
the big job is getting together the back scene this is also the top of the traveling box.when in the upright position the lighting rig and name board will be attached to the top [also in pieces].

It looks like it might be your best model to date, Kim. -- Russ
thanks russ .
it is always good to have a project or 2 around this one is very small in large scale.

with these series of photos you can see that i have completely re worked the big pipe construction ,and in its place it have started work on a dock crane.its jib can be turned to lead your eye into the scene i have been thinking yellow would be nice-maybe.also the upper level water tank is in place.
that this stage i think there are 10 parts just a kit.
cheers kim
The project is original but very nice. I love the rust in the barge.
I have a friend who would like it. It's all right !
hi Sami.
thank you for your interest.there is still a lot of work to do and a few features to try i will see if they work if they dont i will leave them off.i will play around with the color and texture.i would like to be finished by next febuary 2017.if your friend wants to buy it then fine my e mail is kkimmarsh@optusnet.com.au.
my intention is always to have a hobby item and to muck around but it seems most of my models go.
cheers kim
I liked the pipe construction a lot, but it seems to have taken too much sight into the model? The dock crane adds to it definitively.
Cheers,
Volker
hi Volker how are you nice to hear from you.
progress-the crane is nearly finished.my choice of paint finishes of late are AK interactive primers with water color finishes.sometime i add a bit of texture with very fine plaster.the last 2 photos are of a feature that i have been planning a tree about the tunnel location.version 1- a giant tree covering a lot of the harbor, appealing or2-a small version with muted folage that is also part of the tunnel entrance ,this is the winner.
chewers kim.

hi all.
the progress of my half dead tree.i have decided on the smaller version.the first picture is my effort with branch by branch either by drilling holes or gluing on.quite easy if you keep it small.i am always on the look out climbing rose bushes -the best twigs.
the other photos are of the twigs with a bit of foliage and positioned on the base board.looking at it now i might get nature on the display maybe too much of the same color.for foliage i use the range made by mini nature.love scenic express.

hi all .
well i have really gone back to the drawing board as you might say.my water on Dapto was really getting on my nerves.it was getting dusty and loosing its transparency a bit of a mess so off it came plus the wooden retaining wall.
i want concrete but it always does not work i have tried and tried but always looks like you are trying too hard.
so
i will try this idear.
make a form out of cheap cardboard from the craft shop.get some thin wire this represents the expansion joints in the cast concrete cover with plaster[i use cornice cement fast drying and really sticky.now this is the good bit just when the plaster is about to go off pull out the wire.result a random joint that is fractured.also at the same stage bend the whole cardboard mold this will result in more fractures.what a brute fracturing concrete slabs in your bare hands.variations are different gauge of wire and placement of wire.now for the detail and water.
cheers.

That's some smart idea. The result looks very good. Reminds me of broken U-Boat dugouts. Or more dovish: Some 20 years ago I've seen some machines for removing old concrete motorway lanes. Was some kind of a wheel loader with a winch to raise and then let fall down a big vertical weight with a sharp edge. Result looked very similar.
Cheers,
Volker
hi volker how are you.
yes this idear has legs.there are a lot of tricks that can be applied my example is really beat up.i am using it for the new sea wall on Dapto.one piece of info that i forgot is when you do all your cracking it can become fragile.what i do is paint the surface with water based white glue and leave it overnight.
cheers kim
hi all.
Dapto
well not as big as the earth quake in New Zealand but nearly, there has been a few changes.
the sky the clouds have been painted i like artist oil paints they give you a extended drying time so you can play around with color and shape.
with my last post i showed a example of concrete using plaster this has been used on the edge of the dock.steel piles have been added.the old wooden one removed.
the water before was getting on my nerves it was getting very cloudy and loosing its gloss.out it came.i repainted the base again with artist oils and then used a super glossy, 2 part resin.detail around the edges will be added.
so till next time all the very best from kim.

Nice. It looks about finished. -- Russ
hi russ.
it is getting there.
there are a few more idears that i want to try.
the space between the buildings.
some sort of finish line on the left hand side bottom level.
rigging on the crane.
detail barge.
oil spot front single track.
a bit of rolling stock.
and a lighting rig this bit will be fun because unlike most lights that run along the front edge this unit will run along the length of the model.it will be screwed to the top of the back board.
talk soon kim
Hi Kim,

the space between the buildings.
that came to my mind, too. I'd rather insert a closed gate or something with a little distance to the background to have an optical barrier. Painting any kind of believable horizon to the background would be tricky at this place.
Cheers,
Volker
hi volker.
i like it,maybe a wire gate,high and a bit off the backboard.
cheers kim
Hi, Kim -
This is becoming a great diorama, but I have one criticism; the tree and foliage in front of the upper level seem crude, and detract from all the rest of your excellent modeling. They also clutter the space too much, drawing my eye away from the details. I hope you'll take these comments as constructive, because I greatly admire your work.
Carlo
hi carlo.thank
you for your thoughts -interesting we will see how it looks when i finish the detail at the front of the display.yes carlo very constructive finescaller is tops for good criticisms i look forward to it.
cheers kim

One of your better diorama layouts, Kim. And, since we go back to about 1994, you know I've seen most of them. -- Russ
Excellent! I especially like the growth on the old anchor.
a great gift to see this pulled all together
Hello Kim,
also congratulated me on concluding this grandiose diorama.
In addition, you and all other readers a happy celebration and all the best for 2017.
Very Very nice - excellent and inspires
Barney
Hi,
I just discover this layout. It's amazing and very well inspired.
hi all i will do this post in 2 bits sometimes i get to the end and push the wrong button and i loose the lot very up setting.
so.
Dapto is nearly finished and is getting packed for its big adventure-Sydney,Dubi,Rome,Amsterdam and Utrecht.the other side of the world.
i have built the model to be self contained with the idear of large scale[1-35] minim space ,it all fits into a cabin size bag.
it has all worked.
the 2 last job the lights has been done, the graphics is the last.
with the lighting it is a mix of cool and warm LEDS,the light box is made of cardboard-very light ,the graphics will be attached to this.the supporting arm is alumina wires on top.at the back is a tension wire[you could use a spring]to support the whole structure.the assembly has 3 sections the light box ,the arm and 12v transformer.the effect super clear, 3d built for Australian sunlight.
pictures are in the next section.
cheers kim
so the pictures.

Looks great, and the design work that went into making this all pack up neatly into a small, portable package is really impressive.
hi ray.
thank you ,i will do a series to show how it all works.

that would be most welcomed
hi Dapto packs up into a box the back scene is the top of the travelling box,all this fits into a hard shell suit case.
apart from the box there is the rod that supports the lighting rig 2 x12 volt transformers[lights and controller for the loco]and a little tool box -they fit on top.how much i can get through airport security well that is the big question.i all might have to go into the hold dont worry i will take extra super glue.more pictures of how the inner box works soon.
the big adventure-the Modeltrain Expo-Ontraxs 2017-Utrecht Netherlands.
14,500 k-.3 plane trips, 4 train trips and a lot of walking.
i am the first Australian to be invited to the model train Expo basically i am the only one who knows how to do large scale miniture full working displays that can be transported within a budget.
cheers kim.

Impressively clever. -- Russ
Yes, very clever!
Kim, I'm looking forward to seeing it live with me at home.
Hi all.
The Dapto has had its day in the Netherlands -so much fun great way to break down barriers i cant wait to do it again.
It travelled very well not with me but in the hold in the plane.no breakages.
There are a few things that i have learnt and the biggist is doing more work on the back scene.there is a lot of scope for improvement with the sky and how the lighting rig is put together .
So great concept till next time.
Cheers kim
I hope you had a terrific time, Kim. -- Russ
Your layout is very atmospheric, well done, it's great art.
You told you want to upgrade the sky. For the background, I love to use true photo (like you can find on https://www.dreamstime.com/search.php?securitycheck=20aeb2908c9b3ee3dda933f3ca0fb2c6&srh_field=sky&lastsearchvalue=laukvik&s_all=n&s_ph=y&s_il=n&s_video=n&s_audio=n&s_ad=n&s_sl0=y&s_sl1=y&s_sl2=y&s_sl3=y&s_sl4=y&s_sl5=y&s_rf=y&s_ed=y&s_orp=y&s_orl=y&s_ors=y&s_orw=y&s_clc=y&s_clm=y&s_rsf=0&s_rst=7) and then print it at a professional photo developer. The result is always top.
well i am back with a new workspace and a whole new world i have moved i feel one of my better decisions.i have had not had acess to the internet proper only my phone.that also was good.there was a manic depressent controlling the key to the utility room in my apartment block and every time a technician came to connect the wires she would slam the door in his face-i kid you not.it took over a month to get the key changed.
so that is now passed looking at Dapto now i think there should be a lot of changes -great to step back and reass also i have made a list of projects away from railways that will be fun-now in the move where did i put that list.
all the best kim
I'm glad you're back, and living in a better place. -- Russ
yes Russ me too.
hello as soon as i get on top of some new picture software i will post new photos but in the mean time i want to share my direction on re building Dapto and in the process change its name.
there are two rebuilds that will most likely result in its distruction -tough titties.
the viewing angle is wrong it should be landscape instead of portrate.that is the whole length should be viewed from the frount, this is the convential viewing angle.
and it should be a continual run on a loop-set and forget.this is great for shows which fits in my hope of travelling the world with my little suitcase.but how in hell do you get a continual run with large scale in such a small space remember that i use a track gauge of 9mm but a scale of 1-35.just lately i have become aware of Jelly Models from Milano, Italia and there crazy track.just 65 mm wide by 370mm long 9 mm gauge this is continual run i bought some and yes it works-crazy.
so all is possible now for some pictures
cheers kim

My attempt (only mock up, thoughts not finished) in a scale twice a big as yours, but comparable in space ... (you'll have eventually to change suitcase and/or make objects removable while travelling)

hi
nice mock up
but the challenge is to keep it all manigable too many suit cases are a pain especially when a lot of different travel methods are used.remember that you are also taking your clothes and the rest with you.
cheers kim
I think your latest "'round & 'round" will solve the continuous run conundrum.
