All kind day!
My name is Dmitry Kudryashov. I live in the suburb of St. Petersburg - what is in Russia. Once long ago, last century (at school, more than 30 years ago) I learned English. However on it I practically had no practice of communication. In a type of it, for the translation of the messages from Russian into English I will resort to the help of an online translator of PROMT - in advance I apologize for mistakes and inaccuracies which will arise because of it...
I have no experience of construction of models yet, but nevertheless when what began with!
I have no structure for the conceived railroad in a garden yet. That only thing I did not "get" that wanted to buy from PIKO (approached on subject), and with present exchange rate to ruble more narrow and does not cause larger enthusiasm.
It is necessary to go "some other way" - other than acquisition. For a priming, tutoring the sentry lodge was chosen. Earlier, in the Russian Empire, the different railroads were constructed by sentry houses on characteristic projects which often happened standard to all lines of the concrete railroad. On some it is possible even to find drawings in the albums of the executive drawings released after construction of the line.
For a prototype the lineman house Saint Petersburg–Warsaw Railway (https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D0%B5%D1%82%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B1%D1%83%D1%80%D0%B3%D0%BE-%D0%92%D0%B0%D1%80%D1%88%D0%B0%D0%B2%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D0%B6%D0%B5%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%B7%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D0%B4%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%B0) was chosen:

At least, one of such lodges remained, the truth represents very "a pathetic show":

In view of lack of drawings at me by this railroad, it was begun with natural measurements and "drawing" of a 3D model by means of the SketchUp program is more narrow on them:

It is possible to look at history of "drawing" in a photo album on flickr (http://"https://www.flickr.com/photos/kudrdima/albums/72157656942973483").
For a variety of reasons, scale 1:25 was chosen.
Because of a problem with walls, construction began with a roof:

In parallel/incidentally the estate is under construction.
Construction of "estate" as it often occurs in Russia, is begun with a fence, more precisely - in terms of a century before last - with palisade :

Hey, Excellent work so far on a really good looking building.
Please keep us posted with pictures and information of your progress.
Are you cutting your own scale lumber or out sourcing it.
Good work, I think
Rick
Very impressive modeling so far.
We can thank Volker for introducing Dmitry to us. We also should realize it is not easy for him to translate from Russian to English, even with software. And, unless I am mistaken, I think Dmitry is the first modeler from Russia to post here.

Welcome aboard, Demitry!
It looks like you're off to an excellent start on a very interesting and attractive building.
Hello Dmitry. Your model is a very nice introduction to the forums. I will enjoy watching your progress.
Beautiful work with the trusses and picket fence. I got a good laugh out of the use of a shoelace as a clamp in the photo of the roof assembly, very cleaver.
Hi Dmitriy,
good to see you here at finescalerr too! Excellent work as always!
Your project looks very interesting and promising!
It is refreshing to see something entirely new when it comes to the choice of prototype.
Looking forward to see your progress!
Thanks to all for interest in the project and kind words of support!

If I correctly understood a question of a source (origin) of timber, then the answer such:
I buy dry laths (batten) from coniferous breeds of a tree in DIY-shops and I saw them by means of Bench circular saw PROXXON KS 230 (http://www.proxxon.com/en/micromot/27006.php).

;) It was the closest string which appeared "near at hand".
Yours faithfully,
Dmitry Kudryashov.
Cordial welcome aboard, Dmitry!
I'm glad everything seems to be in good working order now with your access to the website - and I'm glad to see your impressive work here at finescalerr. When I got it right, you already got response from the US, Norway and Germany (hope I didn't locate any of the gentlemen incorrectly). Well, your project's geoing to be of some international interest ;).
Cheers,

Dmitry,
please try http://enru.dict.cc/ (http://enru.dict.cc/) as dictionary. For me it works very well and there are a lot of specialized words to find.
Cheers,
Volker

Hello all!
Continuation...
Gradually "I approach" walls - it is planned to make them of foam PVC.
In the original of a wall from a brick, without plaster.
Test of technology of model operation of a wall with a bricklaying.
The image for transfer of the drawing of seams is printed on the laser printer on thin glossy paper - as it was conceived, glossiness has to help transfer of a toner:
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm2.staticflickr.com%2F1595%2F25385912845_1839d3144f_c.jpg&hash=f5b88694a44e76aaced114edaeb45b7f47a9d0cd) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/kudrdima/25385912845/in/album-72157663661681641/)

The image is postponed for PVC by heating by the iron. Temperature of the iron was 80-100 °C.
It is visible what "led" the sheet PVC, the image faded (seams of a bricklaying are cut already partially through):
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm2.staticflickr.com%2F1597%2F25359718166_e854f793fe_c.jpg&hash=5eab2d590fc805bc2aabff353f8ffe4288e2b046) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/kudrdima/25359718166/in/album-72157663661681641/)

In general the result is predictable - the temperature limit of operation of PVC is set to 60 °C, the destruction begins at 135 °C while melting point of a toner is equal to 100-180 °C.
Of course, material deformation - a situation inadmissible therefore the different way of transfer - by disolution of a toner was tested.
Paper, with the printed drawing of seams, kept within the image on the sheet PVC and from the reverse with effort was wiped with a tampon, moistened with the Solvent 647 . The picture on material turned out very contrast and resistant - it was not succeeded to wipe a finger:

Walls get the material embodiment - milling kerf from foam PVC 3 and 4 mm thick.

Cementation increase in a rigidity and weight pursues the aim, "wind resistance" and a vandaloustoychivost as a result increases.
"Sandwich" arose from desire to repeat the nonplanar drawing of a facade. Wall thickness as the sizes of ledges of front elements, are made scale. Besides, cross sections of apertures consider existence of quarters and the different sizes of boxes of summer and winter frames that also demanded "lamination" of walls. Proceeding from explained the concept type-setting (on thickness) walls was also accepted.
It is possible to look at "design" here:

Nice work! -- Russ
Very nice! That will certainly be a very sturdy building with the walls of scale thickness and filled with mortar.
My buildings are so highly condensed to fit into limited space, I usually have to settle for making the walls look like they might be thicker than they really are.
Do not apologize!!!
Keep posting images which explain how you are solving the challenges of the model with the materials at hand. The use of the Dremel tool to cut the mortar lines is inspiring. What you lack in the technology of the tools, you make up for with cleaver solutions. Remember to adapt, improvise, and over come. The greatest gift you can share with the rest of us on this forum is the knowledge of how you solved the problems of the build.

Ray! Thanks for an appreciation of my modest efforts.
At you remarkable buildings - very original and recognizable. A variety material, the technician of execution of facades of your buildings inspires.
I am not limited by space and I want to make
model of the existing building. For this reason I try to observe the scale sizes.
In my area there is a lot of snow, the strong wind and rains. Happens that neighbour's cats, dogs roam, hedgehogs come. Eventually, as I live in the suburb of the larger city of (St. Petersburg), it is necessary to remember asocial people, vandals. As protection against similar adverse factors the major role is played by
weight.

He completely agrees - very often much more interestingly
as it is made, but not just end result which can cause feeling of characteristic inferiority: "To me so never to make - only to buy". And having looked at the course of building it is possible also most to try.

Everything is very simple - I use a metal ruler as a guide and I conduct Dremel along her. ;)

Do you fix the ruler with some tape for each cut? How do you make the short verticla cuts without damaging the neighbouring stones at least a bit? That need s to be done somewhat precise ...
Cheers,
Volker
Actually as a guide I use not a ruler (it too thin and mild), but external jaw of larger сalipers - it large and several millimeters have thickness.
The guide nothing fastens to the basis - only a clip a hand, the second hand I conduct Dremel.
Vertical seams of a laying, become in the same way, but it is necessary to raise a mill. The mill rises not upright, and by Dremel inclination, leaning on a black basic ring of a nozzle.
For receiving rather clear seam, I pass each seam 2-3 times (back and forth).
On one wall about 3-4 hours left.
Back and hands of course "shiver" after that. ;)
Outstanding creativity. -- Russ

Kind day, Ray!Color looks a little more saturated - so far the surface of a tree did not dry out after impregnation.
But in general everything is correct - I try to control "balance white" in the photos. ;)

Maybe blend the black paint into the roof with a light, thin overspray of green? -- Russ
Yes - me the same isn't pleasant the place below a chimney - something is necessary with these the place to do...
Dmitriy, The photo of the 3rd layer is darker than the photo of the 1st layer and it is difficult for me to tell how dark the soot and stains really are in your 3rd photo. What looks wrong to you? if it is just that the soot color is too strong, perhaps a few very thin washes of the green will help, but perhaps the "soot" and other dark areas on the roof are a little too uniform in color? Most old copper roofs that I have seen still have some traces of the dark brown oxide that the copper turns before it develops the green patina, and sometimes there is almost a rust color as well.
What kind of smoke do you think came out of the chimney? Wood smoke? coal smoke? The ash from either one would also leave a lighter color and acid from a coal fire that settled onto the copper below the chimney would change the color of the copper when it got wet in the rain.
I think if you first added a brown wash over the "soot" color and when that cured, a thin wash of the green and perhaps in a few place an even lighter green might be what you are looking for?
The roof is very interesting to me. I've never seen one quite like it before, the way the rain gutter is built into it (as opposed to something that is attached to the eaves). And you've modeled it quite well!

Roof integral trough along the lower edge of the roof slope were very widespread in Russia in the 19th century and I continue to be applied still. Possibly the reason that suspended trenches are more subject to damage by snow and ice which slip from a roof.

Dmitriy, The photo of the 3rd layer is darker than the photo of the 1st layer and it is difficult for me to tell how dark the soot and stains really are in your 3rd photo. What looks wrong to you? ...
It seemed to me that soot traces too obvious and contrast roofs of rather next sheets.
Quote from: Bill Gill
... if it is just that the soot color is too strong, perhaps a few very thin washes of the green will help, but perhaps the "soot" and other dark areas on the roof are a little too uniform in color?...
... I think if you first added a brown wash over the "soot" color and when that cured, a thin wash of the green and perhaps in a few place an even lighter green might be what you are looking for?
I softened blackness of soot near a pipe a little and added a little terracotta color for imitation of traces of a rust from an iron cap of a chimney.
Quote from: Bill GillMost old copper roofs that I have seen still have some traces of the dark brown oxide that the copper turns before it develops the green patina, and sometimes there is almost a rust color as well.
In Russia then (the 19th century) and now a copper roof not the cheapest - not each cathedral was able to afford. A prototype of model is especially utilitarian building - the roof is ironed and painted:

Yes! The roof looks good! So does the rest of the model. -- Russ
Dmitriy,
the model is outstanding and taking the pictures under a cloudy sky isn't counterproductive at all.
Regarding the stains: I'd advice to rather use washes in several layers than trying to mix a final tone. There's less danger to have to dark areas, and blending stains into surrounding areas is much easier. For sure you did that. Exactly. An I make a fool of myself :D. To me the chimney itself is lacking some weathering, at this stage it look's a bit like a foreign matter. The dark tones on the roof around it would have affected the chimney, too. Don't know if at the upper or lower areas. Upper, if smoke directly deposes on the stones, lower, if dirt from the chimney's covering is washed down by rain, what seems to happen with the roof, too.
To make it a bit complicated: During my studies I worked at an art foundry. They told me, that air pollution (at least around 1995) made new copper roofs or bronce parts rather getting black than green, so we had to artificially 'green' the bronce sculptures, but I don't recall the chemical being used back then. Maybe those dark stains aren't caused by smoke or ash directly but rather by some acid smoke ingredients, which would have the chimney's stones rather leave unstained?
However, taking a look at a building with a copper roof and wood firing, which still is in use (both the building and firing) may give the answer.
Cheers,
Volker

Dmitry, that looks very good even with no finish on the wood.
Do not paint this.
The texture of the wood leaves one with an impression of mass and strength. And, sitting here with winter outside, the padding the vestibule is sitting on gives the feeling of winter and cold. Not only great modeling but also wonderful feeling of the environment the piece is built for.

this is outstanding. It's too bad that you will have it outside in the garden, abandoned to those somewhat harsh weather conditions :o. It's already very convincing as it is; one giveaway is the rather bold color at the gable's timber. I think some additional weathering to get a unifying look with roof and walls would add to it.
