Title: 10 1/4" Feldbahn Diorama in 1:16
Post by: mad gerald on April 22, 2017, 11:17:50 AM
G'day all,

The idea of a 10 1/4" (260 mm) Feldbahn layout in 1/16 kept me busy. So I built a loco mock up too (from paper and cardboard). The loco is heavily influenced by a loco prototype manufactured by Alan Keef Ltd. (narrow gauge light railway engineers) for 7 1/4" and 10 1/4" gauge. In 1/16 scale a loco representing 10 1/4" is rather small - in comparison to the BBU battery loco it appears really tiny.

I think now everything (of my basic quipment) fits, to start a new micro-layout of a 10 1/4" (260 mm) feldbahn in 1/16 scale: my space, the rails, the radii, the rolling stock, prototypes ...

Cheers

hi with such a tight radius i think that you will have to use a long rigid copula bar.cheers

Not as such, Kim ... apart from the fact, that I actually intend to use a short rigid bar between the couplers - especialy while pushing wagons.

A 15 cm radius in 1/16 scale is meant to represent a 250 cm radius in 1/1 scale, which has been approved to work on railways* with 260 cm (10 1/4") gauge, assuming short rolling stock and short wheelbases

Just a short update: progress of scratchbuilding a 260 mm (10 1/4") Feldbahn loco in 1/16 scale from styrene (and some brass parts). Prototype are locos built by Alan Keef Ltd. running on tracks with 7 1/4" and 10 1/4" Zoll. The hood isn't ready and mountedyet (just attached loosely for pics) ...

Thanks, guys ... I designed and built another vehicle for the new gauge: a Feldbahn storage battery locomotive. The chassis is heavily influenced by the AEG storage battery loco (hospital railway, Lainz/Vienna), the prototype for the upper part is the EFAG storage battery loco in Switzerland (FWF, Otelfingen). I used sheet styrene (of different thickness), styrene shapes (some of them modified) and brass bolts. The reference guy came with the idea to put a wooden crate on top of the storage battery and going to use it for working gloves, tools ... and his lunchbox  ::). Couplings are still missing (in progress) as well as operating elements and the seat, which will be each correspond with the prototype (EFAG loco) too.

Cool! I like it a lot. The wooden box provides a nice contrast with the "metal" used on the rest of the loco.

No big deal/progress:

The battery storage loco on the right was at first the conversion of an idea. Now I'm in doubt, if it has turned out too bulky, apart from messing up the laminated springs (can't remove them without collateral damages).

In the meantime I had an idea for a modification of the battery storage loco (shown on the left), already with a styrene chassis - but still with a cardboard mock up (body) on top ...

The answer seems simple: Build the new, smaller loco. You already dislike two thins about the big loco. That aside, I like the way you designed the brick and wood structure in the background with all those rooflines and protrusions. -- Russ

Don't have to contribute anything appropriate regarding photography, but as I never came up with the idea to try a "scale man" perspective, I just gave it a shot - with an iPhone ... just for fun. The crappy quality is a result of bad printies and bad illumination ... nevertheless I really like "scale man" perspective ...

The lighting in the last photo gives the appearance of a mid morning in the summer shot.  Well done.

A little bit of dirt in the corners and scattered clusters of grass in the tile joints and the last picture will totally fool even the best of us.

The fruit box is great.  I repeat Ray's comment.

The couplings consist of individual parts, made from different styrene strips and shapes, assembled with acetone. To get accurate positioned drill holes I made simples patterns - from styrene as well. Manufactoring these couplings was quite tedious, but fortunately I only need a couple of them.

I finally managed to find/create a matching vehicle for my 1/16 scale Feldbahn, which seems to be authentic enough to run on 10.25 prototype gauge. The chassis has already been made from styrene, the bodywork is still a mockup made from printed cardboard. Prototypes are electric sit down rider tractors .......... which have been occasionally converted to run on narrow (or minimum) gauge Feldbahn.

How would you name such a vehicle? Storage battery loco? Critter? Trammer? Speeder? Rail tractor? Or else ... ?

Cheers

G'day all!

I built a wooden box for my micro layout, which has identically dimensions as the white plastic box on the right to fit in the corresponding shelf unit of the well-known swedish home-center. This is propably gonna be one of the smallest functional layouts (diorama) in 1/16 scale.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.de.feldbahnmodellbau.de%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2018%2F01%2F03-0032-micro-layout-diorama-P1030612.jpg&hash=5dcf9c10791189a531947b8aaeb14b60ead5191c)

Not quite sure yet, if I'm going to continue reporting further progress here, as IMHO (railroad) fora suffer from an increasing lack of popularity and participation. Many former forum members - genererally speaking - show their work in own blogs or on f***book, some fora have already been closed (or are going to be closed). Apart from that I'd like to spend some time on creating art ... may be the time for taking a break ... ?!  ::)

Cheers

I always look forward to your posts and really wish you would continue to stay active here. I don't understand why people prefer Facebook or other social media sites. Aside from all the negatives we read about them in the news, they also do little or nothing to inspire people who do not already "follow" somebody. (Besides, who wants to "follow" when one may lead?)

This is not a typical forum. We seem far more polite and helpful to each other than any other group I have found (in any field). In general I would say members of this forum also are more talented and perceptive. Why would you or anyone else want to give that up?

I always thought people here enjoy seeing your art. Why deprive us of that pleasure?

If enough people feel as you do, I will have to close the forum. I hope that will not be necessary.

Anyway, those are my thoughts.

My thoughts on Facebook forums - not a lot to say - every day friends saying something that rely don't mean much - photos of work benches (cluttered)  with a model somewhere
and not much on how it was built and generally confused issues - Im no angel but the swearing is totally uncalled for ! and last of all its just hassle and confusing to us "old school type"
who's computing skills are poor -I will stick with the devil I know - and only hope that such talented people on this Forum stay with it. + that help is always at hand just ask !

Let me echo what the others have said. Gerald, you are a valuable member of this forum and I would hate to see you leave. So please don't.

As for Facebook, I do belong to several railroad and modeling FB groups and, and while I do see some value in the FB groups, I have found much the same thing as Barney. What we have here is much different from those groups, and I find this forum far more valuable to me personally for just the reasons Barney and Russ stated and for the camaraderie (not to mention somehow feeling like women in thong bikinis are just around my corner).

I did not like the DIY wooden box anymore and decided to use a matching box (from the well-known swedish home-center) for the shelf. It turned out to be a little tricky, to achieve a clean and propper cutout with only very simple tools. The alingment of the layout itself has to be adapted (now in line with transverse side), but it's only a mock up at the moment anyway.

Gerald, I know this was not your intent, but that layout would make a most enjoyable kitchen cabinet: Open the door and the locomotive brings out a cart with some item that you were searching for :)  Seriously, though, the box frames the layout nicely.
