Title: Tower Skidders and loaders
Post by: PuckHog on March 15, 2009, 09:22:29 PM
Hi Folks,  It seems like I've stalled out on the O scale machine shop for now so I've decided to work on the logging "show" over on my hon3 layout. The log harvesting portion of the layout has always been dominated by a model of the Crown Willamette Paper Company's tower skidder designated No.3.
I built this model many years ago after seeing a fantastic brass model by a Swiss(?) gentleman in the "NGSG" maybe 1987. The story by Bill Roy included the info that Bill had drawn a fairly complete set of plans for this monster. I was hooked !!.  On a trip to Caboose Hobbies I found the plans and had a long but enjoyable build.
As Jacq01 put it so well (in the Logging Project topic) I am also a 'kitchen table modeler". I have no skill to machine gears and drums so my model has all the parts of the real thing but maybe not the exact number of teeth on a gear or the same rivet pattern on all pieces. When ever possible i "kitbashed".
I will post a bunch of pictures on where it stands now and this thread will deal with adding more support items for the skidder and finishing the surrounding area more to match some really good photos of the utter devastation that these machines caused.     .....Thanks,   Randy

Fantastic modelling, brass / styrene/ use of other kits ????
Did you see rivets during you sleep when building.  You made these individually ?

I still have the article in one of the old swiss magazines. An amazing but especially very very large model.

Thanks Jacq and Marty,  Coming from you guys that is high praise indeed!  Jacq.. I did not take photos back then but maybe can explain basics of build ....

The basic car body is kitbashed from two Tichy Company 120 ton crane kits. I used this kit because of the great rivet detail on the frame. From the frame up most  everything else is built up from styrene, brass and a lot!!! of white metal detail parts.....

The tower was made up of brass I-beams and brass stock soldered together for strength then plastic lattice work added....Randy

The crane kits and Central Valley bridge parts contributed most of the lattice work with some scratch built if I couldn't find something that fit right ....Randy

Jacq ...Most of the rivets were parts from Grantline ( gondola end plates ?)  .....

Or embossed with a pounse tool on brass shim stock or sheet styrene.....

The gears were a big part of the models appearance so I tried to get them as close as possible to the real thing. After locating a gear that was the right size I would often have to "dress it up". This photo of parts for another machine that I'm building uses this process.  The solid gear casting on the upper left is from the CHB kit. After removing the plain center portion a Grantline cable sheeve casting with nice webbing detail is inserted then nbw castings can be added if needed......

it was important that the cable used would be strong enough to be rigged for display yet be scale in size with no fuzzing......Randy

You mentioned the site "Steam in the woods" Am I doing something wrong or is this site not working? Maybe Mark will be on soon and I can ask him..Randy

Hello,

About the fabulous website of Marc, it is really dramatic to lose one of best the information sources on logging railroad!
And I think also for many model makers!
I looked at this site during many hours and I learned much  things on the logging!
Enclosed photo of scratchbuilt Double End Loadder in HO, made with styrene and RGM détail parts.
Sincerely!

Sorry to come in so late here....been busy.

Beautiful models of some rerely modeled equipment. Really love the Universal loader.... I have never seen a model of one of these before.....It's one of my favorite pieces of equipment. You guys should really be proud of your models.  Somwhere in my boxes of photos I have a pic of a Universal Loader tipped on it's side with the booms bent....I have about 7-10 pics of a McGiffert on its side as well.

....Insofar as the website is concerned, I doubt it will be coming back....and if so at least not in the next 5-10 years.

Hello Compadre,

thanks Marc for this reply!

You do not have maybe  the time, but with your mega collection of photograph you will be able to make THE book of Logging equipment !

So for scrathbuilt models it possible to require photos of you?

Sincerely!

Lloyd

Yes, I will continue to help people with images and information, HOWEVER:

It will be on a case-by-case basis; depending on if I think it is a worthwhile project, how I feel/what I know about the person requesting the images (can I trust this person/entity), and how much info they require (do I have the time to find and prep the information needed.....I have a day job and a life too  ;) )

I used to get a lot of requests by people that wanted a print of this or that image for their model room, or some such thing, and from modelers that kept asking for more, and more......not respecting/understanding the time or effort it took on my end......and really not even building what I thought were quality models with the supplied info.........this will definitely not be done any more. I will also not help people that make trying to help them "difficult" ...IE e-mail accounts that can't handle large  or multiple files, can't work/operate an FTP application, or can't figure out how to open/run a CD with images. (Basically if they're to dumb to work with the medium I definitely will not waste my time.)

I finally dug out my images of the tipped/collapsed Universal Loader.....(in doing so I also found a box with a couple hundred more photos, that I had forgotten I had...woo-hoo!)

The comapny is Weed Lumber Co., in Northern California, and the year is 1914.
The first two images show the loader being erected in the field. Note in the first image the boiler at the right; it seems to have been coated in white lead, or asbestos for shipping.

These two images are after the collapse.
Note in the upper image that steam and dust are still hanging in the air, and the locomotive is still coupled to the log train (red arrow), this photo must have been taked almost immediately, or very shortly after the collapse. The second image shows the loader from the rear, likely a few days later.

[EDIT:  Having a Brain-fart/Senior-Moment today.......The 4 images are tagged/noted "Lidgerwood"....I should have written "CLYDE" Universal Loader.]
