Hi Guys

latest off the production line is a 35th scale DeWinton 1873 Vertical boiler quarry engine.

completely scratch built in brass without any commercial parts of any nature (motor/gears excepted) in 35th scale to 16.5mm gauge (600mm prototype gauge)  Unfortunately no complete drawings are available, hence model was built from photo's and limited plans from similar locomotives.  DeWinton built approximately 80 of this type with many surviving into the 1950 working the Welsh slate quarries.

the model is powered via a 50rpm 3v micro gearhead motor driving a set of cross helical gears on a lay shaft, belt drive to the rear axle and side rods to the main axle.  The motion is fully detailed and fully functional.

power is supplied via a 3.7v LiPo battery in the water tank and TrainworxOz radio control located in the boiler together with the motor, isolation switch, charger plug and receiver module.

was an interesting model to develop and a pleasure to see it's ultra slow speed operation.  construction time around 90 hours.

enjoy

Very cool project, perfectly executed!  Did you have any reception problems due to the receiver inside the brass boiler?

TrainworxOz RC system works exceptionally well using standard 20mm x 0.6mm aerial on receiver board.  I have had it in use with a 65 metre distance from the model in a hall environment.

I love those engines, your model is excellent. Are there prototype drawings available for these?

Lovely bit of modelling -very nice - now for those fellow modellers who want to build one start with a "must have book" all the information - plans -measurements -loads of photos -the complete history and detail drawings of all the bits this is the one to have

Hi Bernard,

Nice job as usual!

Where did you find the helical gear? PSC?

Franck

Hi Franck

the gears are machined by me.  Unfortunately the PSC gears are only available in brass at 6mm OD and 2.3mm bore.  This is a problem since the OD is too big for many installations and re-boring is risky due to off centre bores being common.

regrettably the machining time & wastage makes my gears far too costly to retail.

have a great day
