1/22,5 HAWE horticulture trolley

G'day all,

even still suffering from a lack of time and the realization, that my modelling doesn't always meet my necessary requirements, I started a new project: a HAWE trolley as often used in (dutch) horticulture companies. I came across  a HAWE more or less accidental, looking for a prototype of Feldbahn vehicle that I would be able to build to scale with my actual skills, material and equipment. For completion of my Struppe Akkulok, the Diema LR and an early version of an ASEA Akkulok it seems better to reach a higher level of skills (especially CAD-work) regarding the missing parts ...

HAWE is a short form of Herman & Wooning, a former dutch manufacturer for this kind of trolleys. HAWE today, the HAWE Systems Europe BV, is still active in the "gardening business", but as a specialist in logistics and transport systems for greenhouse horticulture, not building any trolleys anymore.

The power unit is a regauged (from 16,5mm to 26,7mm) Bachmann® On30 Streetcar, combined with Drobeck wheels plus casted axle boxes plus several brass profiles and wood strips ...

where do you get the axle boxes. Looks like they fit in 1:35 scale too.

... they are definitely in 1/22,5 scale of Feldbahn DIN axleboxes and were designed about 2005/2006 by a modelling member of the Buntbahn Forum ... here's the corresponding thread *click* ... and a close up of an axle box ...

made a little progress on this project:

The brass casted axleboxes got soldered to the frame U-shaped channels (brass). Therefore I made a pattern from a U-shaped channel (brass), drilled 2 holes in it with the right distance to each other, marked the positions on the frame, where the axle boxes should be fixed, squeezed the pattern onto the frame from below and drilled the holes for the axle boxes through the pattern into the frame. The frame for the driver's platform on the rear and the couplings are made from square tube (brass). The whole frame was fixed with tape at the driving unit for demonstration/photo purposes only.

Photos and information I collected show/tell, that there where 2 different types (old/new) of the HaWe, with further variations on nearly every HaWe built. My version is a kinda blend of both types: it has the rear driver's platform of the new type as well as the upper wooden frame of the old type, looking about this kinda clone (exhibit at the Gelderse Smalspoor Stichting in the Netherlands) of an unkown manufacturer and my version will be a tiny bit shorter as the original(s) ...

the 2 kinda holding bows are made from square brass rod (2x2mm) and have been soldered to the frame. This kind of driver's platform is - as far as I know - common with the new version of the HaWe. The sheet metal the driver is supposed to stand on is made from card board and temporarily only, just for demonstration purposes, as well as the miniature bricks the frame is jacked up on ...    ... because there is no connection to the driving unit yet ...

G'evening all,

I found some time for a little progress on my HAWE: I shortened the front section of the frame a little bit to allow the HAWE to go through tighter radii with a wagon. BTW:  HAWE trolleys were able to pull up to 2 wagons up to a total weight of 5.000 kg, with an own weight of barely 1.000 kg. I also swapped the front coupling for a better matching one, regarding the couplings of my flat wagons and soldered a kinda checkered plate (better term?) and a pedal to the drivers platform. Coupling and checkered plate I recieved form a modelling mate (thanks a lot, Frithof!), the pedal is a part of a former brass locking clamp ...
