3401 Patterson Avenue - Richmond Va 1959

Built in the spring of 1923, this tiny stucco service station was erected at the corner of Roseneath Rd and Patterson Ave - rt 6 . Origionally , it was beleived to have been a Conoco dealer . Historical photos prove this out in Benjamin Harrison and Wayne Hendersons book , Service Stations . It is recorded though that the building was converted into a Richfield station during the summer of 1939. Here , I grew up nearby while this filling station was a viable enterprise .

The station remained intact until 1965 when the city Fire Marshall declared all service stations using large canopies over their pumps were declared illegeal . A couple of surounding stations got grandfathered due in part to them being in a Concrete structure , not this one as it was Stucco and wood lathe . hence , a simple Colonial Revivial repaced the Stucco structure measuring 10 X 10 X 18 feet tall at the crest . The Richfield name would also be replaced too. Richfield was a subsidirary of Sinclair for years . Dave Sinclair had retailed under different names to keep the goverment from really finding out what was really going on in the oil patch !
