Is there a chart that shows what colors are used for what?
example - Barnwood for old wood .
                  ?         for rust metal?

Nope!
When using the craft store stuff, the name usually tells it all.
I would recommend using better quality paint, eventually you will learn why the craft paint is less than a dollar.

Using the basic artist colors is a good starting place.
