Does anyone know if this material will hold up in a mechanical application? Say, for gearing and such?

If you mean the blue stuff, I would think it could work for a light demonstration, but it would be too soft surfaced and brittle for any long life especially under load.

Casting them in something tougher might be an option.  Smooth-on's website shows cast resin gears

These guys claim they produce stuff that they can be integrated into the finished product
