Mine was an old version from BRAWA but also H0.
It is absolutelly not a French design but looks a bit European so i used a few of those but not for the 'official' street lighgting. For that i made a better  rypical French design (which were square and a different shape) adapted to take a small LED and made  it be printed by Shapeways. And those are well 1/32. You'll see them soon.

Still i must say i discarded all working lighting after dismantling "PONDÉZAR" and "ROCHEFORT". Not even the special designed & printed lamps will be lighted in any of the three ongoing dioramas or future ones.

Bill Gill

Beautiful scenes, Daniel.
What did you use to model these reeds in the foreground?reeds, Daniel .jpg

Daniel

#56
Thank you, Bill.

What i use is a type of wild grass growing... everywhere. I don't know it's name but am sure you know it. What you see in next photos has been treated with a week and a half in the  Glycerine bath (40% Glycerine / 60% initially hot water) and is already dried.

IMG_0013 (476) by Daniel Osvaldo Caso, on Flickr

What one wants is the needed length of the steam with only the hairs at the top...

IMG_0014 (445) by Daniel Osvaldo Caso, on Flickr

It is very simple to gentle press a bit the hairs you don't want and pull the rest of the haors, always gently to you while holding the top ones with the tips of your fingers of your other hand...

IMG_0015 (457) by Daniel Osvaldo Caso, on Flickr

You see  some of the hairs are gone so one must keep pulling also the rest and yoiu get it...

IMG_0016 (471) by Daniel Osvaldo Caso, on Flickr

The rest is simply green stained Sisal.

It is a lot less work than it seems.

Daniel

B.t.w.: i use to keep all the stems and use them to model scale reeds. All you need to do is to draw convenient spaced dark rings an you are done.

Bill Gill

#57
Thanks, Daniel. I thought your reeds looked familiar. I have seen very similar grass here ( I don't know the name of it either). Nice work getting rid of the seed husks and thinning the hairs.

A few years ago I experimented modeling some reeds in the winter in HO scale. The stems on those look a lot bulkier than yours. I used plastic needles from an artificial Christmas tree for the stems, paper for the few leaves and fine foam turf for the seed heads.

Yours look a lot better.
The first photo are real reeds near where I live.

Daniel

Well, Bill, thank you for feeding my Robinson's thread and for sharing your photos. You are certainly welcome.

Indeed, your intent doesn't look as what the first photo lets see.
Neither do mine!!!

Here the trick to, instead of comparing, judging and all that, finding a way:

Take pen and paper and start looking your build very good.
Try to write everything what you consider 'wrong':

For example:

1) the proportions are not right: too short stems.

2) Too thick material

3) The colours need to be a bit more yellowish...

4) Something more airy will be needed to sugest the thin hairs of the real
   thing.

5) etc.

Then forget judging and take a look around in the real world and see what materials could give a better rendering.

At this point your first 'wrong' intent has lost all the 'wrong' and became a clear guide for next step. Isn't great?

WARNING:

Doesn't matter how good next intent's results are, even if they get published, filmed or whatever, those will follow their own sequence and after a while you will surprise yourself seeing your successful, published and filmed result become another simple 'to do' list.

That is -at least for me-  the most marvelous aspect of this so called 'hobby': it is not about what we do, the results and certainly neither about what we know but gives us a chance to discover our own way at every step. Priceless! Isn't it?

And still there is another half: one could contemplate the results of the first intent and realize there where several very good done things. Just to mention a few:

1) The quality of the 'group' of plants is there.

2) The chaotic but still similar orientation of the stems is there,

3) The gray-ish shade of the stems during winter is also there.

4) The need to differentiate the textures at the stem and at the top is there

5)  ... you got it again.

Hmm... Thank you again, for giving me the chance to realize all this!

Daniel
